Nearly 900 Years of History

Our church has a fascinating story spanning nine centuries. Originally dedicated to St Nicholas (mentioned in a charter from 1150), the building underwent substantial reconstruction in the 15th century after the Denys family of Orleigh acquired the manor. The Victorian era brought further transformation with architect John Hayward’s significant 1843-1844 restoration, when the north aisle was added.

Notable Features

Easter Sepulchre

St John the Baptist contains a rare Easter Sepulchre, situated on the north side of the chancel. This precious medieval feature is one of relatively few surviving examples in Devon, making it of particular historical and liturgical significance.

The Altar

Crafted from an ancient Spanish carved oak chest from Culver House, combining exquisite beauty with historical provenance. A stunning centrepiece for worship that connects us to centuries past.

The Font

Dating to the 15th century, this baptismal font has welcomed countless generations into the Christian faith. Its enduring presence speaks to the continuity of worship in this sacred space.

The Churchyard

Ancient yew trees grace the churchyard, some potentially as old as the church itself. The grounds contain listed monuments and memorials that tell the story of our community through the centuries.
